What is low carb eating?

For many of us, reducing the amount of carbohydrate we consume is by far the easiest way to lose weight and have a healthier diet.

You focus on cutting out (or drastically reducing) sugary foods and drinks, as well as starchy foods such as bread and potatoes. Once you have got used to it, this way of eating is easy to follow. You still feel full after meals, as you are just changing the mix of what you eat. You will find that the weight loss effects are excellent.

We start people off on a relatively easy program of Low Carbs, not No Carbs. Once they have got established with low carb, many people go on to cut out certain foods completely, adopting ways of eating such as Paleo or Gluten-free.

Why choose low carb as your Way of Eating?

Low carb is great for people who want to have some simple rules, and don’t want to think about diets and calories all the time.

Because carbohydrates are high in calories (and often have a high GI), reducing carbs can be an effective way to help you lose weight and keep it off in the long term. Low carb is a great choice if you have a lot of weight to lose, or you want to lose it quickly.

Reducing carbohydrates also shows very promising benefits for your long term health.

  • Reducing sugar (sugars are carbs) intake seems likely to have major health benefits. See the work of Dr Robert Lustig, for example.
  • Scientific evidence is mounting, although not conclusive, in showing that reducing carb intake can reduce health risks including diabetes, heart disease, cancer and Alzheimer’s.

Low carb is a great Way of Eating for

  • People who want to lose weight.
  • Food lovers, especially people who love meat & fish, dairy, and eggs.
  • Bigger eaters, who like large portion sizes and dislike feeling hungry.
  • People who prefer to live by a simple rule rather than looking at the detail of every ingredient in every meal.
  • Anyone - which means all of us - who wants to reduce their risk of Type 2 diabetes, heart disease, cancer, Alzheimer’s. There is a lot of science still to do but the health benefits look very promising.
  • Men, who often hate the idea of a ‘diet’ and calorie counting, and do not want to be hungry at the end of a meal - but find low carb eating can be incredibly effective and easy once you get used to it.
  • People who are willing to give up carbs! That means bread, sugary drinks, cookies, potatoes, pizza - if you love these too much you need to find another way of eating (try fasting)
